Launched on February 17, 1996, NEAR Shoemaker made a flyby of asteroid Mathilde on June 27, 1997 and a flyby of asteroid Eros on December 23, 1998. It then became the first spacecraft to orbit an asteroid when it entered Eros’ orbit on February 14, 2000, before going on to land on Eros’ surface on February 12, 2001.
